MXC Goes Two-for-Two at Regional; Round Rock & State Bound

Update November 3, 2012, Lubbock, Texas, Mae Simmons Park – In dramatic fashion at today’s TX UIL Region I Championship, the Marcus Marauders Boys’ Varsity and Girls’ Varsity teams both finished in 2nd Place to advance to the Texas State Championship next Saturday in Round Rock, Texas, just North of Austin. Both MXC teams displayed a phenomenal will to win today, meriting a poetic nod to Ms. Melissa Underwood’s poem, The Will to Win:

You can’t coach heart, you can never coach desire,
they must always come from within.
Rules may be learned, and skills developed,
But you cannot be taught the will to win.
You must reach a little deeper to bring out your best,
You must be your own motivation.
Keep going, never quit, you have to have a reason,
You are your own strength, your own inspiration.

And “if” we may take poetic license to use Kipling’s words to help report on today’s event, Rudyard may well have penned this tribute to MXC’s runners and coaching staff, as a variation on his famous “iffy” theme:

If (You’re a 2012 MXCer)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Others are losing theirs, doubters through & through.
If you can trust your team to see you past the blue,
Heeding not what others may doubt of you;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or when lied about, not deal in lies,
Or being hated, not give in to hating,
And hold your head up, seeking out the wise;

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat these two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop to rebuild ’em up with honest tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on a run of a cross country course,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about it – instead believing in a higher force;

If you can force your heart and nerve and flesh and sinew
To serve your mind’s eye long after they’re physically gone,
And leave it all out there on the course when there’s nothing left in you
Except the Will which says for sake of team “I run and must hold on!’

If dealing with the doubting crowd you can keep your virtue,
Or face adversity – but not lose you’re common touch,
If neither foes nor doubters can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can endure the ups and downs of an unforgiving 5K race,
Galloping at a five-to-six minute mile for a distance run,
A road trip to Round Rock is the reward of your pace,
And you’re living up to an MXCer’s legacy, who’s job’s not yet done!
